Welcome to The Pinayist!
The Pinayist is the blog of “Manic Pixie Depressive Gremlin” author Pia Besmonte. It is a Pinay-written blog to focus on mental health, to critique the cultural and societal representation of Filipina women, and to build a community of groundbreaking millennial Pinays.
Filipinas are incompletely represented in the world. Google “Pinay” and you will get cute celebrities, beauty queens, sexy stars, mail order brides, overseas domestic helpers, and pornography.
I’m not in any of those categories, like most women I know. I am looking for stories with which I can identify, advice on life stages unique to my generation as a millennial Pinay, and women to look up to. I am not the only one!
“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”
– Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Why The Pinayist?
I came up with The Pinayist after self-publishing my first book of poems for Filipino women and girls titled “Manic Pixie Depressive Gremlin”. Writing about mental health, unhealthy romanticism, and the importance of self-acceptance in healing from trauma opened Pandora’s Box for my readers.
Those who read my book gave me feedback that they were moved, even resolved to change for the better (no more co-dependent relationships, no more self-harm, etc.) They asked for more, and this blog was born.
What drives The Pinayist?
- Pinay beauty comes from our strength, our resilience in tough times, our ability to endure life with a smile.
- Pinay sensuality comes from passion, our innate wisdom of our place in the world, our continuous drive to improve ourselves and improve the world.
- Pinays’ deepest secret is not that we are the most loving women on earth. We love because we come from a long lineage of strong, sensual, survivor women who loved us into life.
The Pinayist is the new website you’ll bookmark on your browser.
